The official GTA 4 website was launched on March 1st, 2007, and consisted of a logo and a countdown to to the first official trailer. The countdown began at 28 days, and reached zero at 18:00 EST on March 29. 2007.
Traffic to the website at this time crashed the website 10 minutes before the trailer was meant to be released, meaning fans had to wait almost an hour more to see it.
The first trailer lasted approximately one minute. It included an introduction to the setting (Liberty City) and was inspired by another trailer, featuring time-lapse footage of New York City.
The second trailer was released on June 28th, 2007
Rockstar formed a partnership with Yahoo! Games to release the trailers at the same time. This would mean traffic is shared between the two sites.
This trailer also runs for about a minute but is more action-packed than the first trailer and hints at certain aspects of the story line.
Rockstar announced that the third trailer would be released on December 6th, 2007.
This trailer lasted 2 minutes. It focuses on Niko, and the relationship he has with his cousin, Roman. New characters are introduced and and there is a lot more action than previous trailers.
The fourth and final trailer was released on March 28th, 2007 and runs for about a minute.
The trailer is comprised of cut-scene and gameplay footage, and a section of new screenshots appear in the montage towards the end.
